Predicting California

Aug 30, 2006
Predicting a top three for Sunday’s race at California? That’s for wimps.
We’ll take it a step further — predicting how each of the nine Chase contenders will fare.
Of course, there are a lot of unknowns. Being that I’m at the office in Woodbridge and not on the shop floors in Mooresville, Concord or Huntersville, I can’t independently confirm the durability of the parts that will be running the race. (And even if I was, I’m not technical enough to know what makes a good part and what makes a risky part.)

The Mike Griffith column mentioned yesterday was one of many voices coming out against the lack of action at Bristol.
The Associated Press, which plays things as straight and narrow as possible, called it a ho-hum race. (And, by most definitions, that was truth, not opinion.)
Bristol: Boring race, Chase drama largely eliminated

Ah, the power of predictability. After lauding all of the wonderful virtues of racing at Bristol, we saw precious few of them on Saturday night.
The race was a walkover, with Matt Kenseth winning by more than half a second over Kyle Busch. Kenseth led the final 50 laps and 100 of the final 101 laps.
Dale Earnhardt tapping Terry Labonte? Not quite.

Bristol: The place to be

Better than Daytona in February. Better than Indy in August (or July, as it will be next year). Better than darn near any other race you can think of — and it’s finally upon us: the night race at Bristol.
For those that continually lament NASCAR’s abandonment of its roots, this is the one time when they have no argument. Saturday night, under the lights, racing at a track that seems better suited for late models than 43 Nextel Cup cars.
