Responsible Hamlin; why didn’t Burton bail sooner?

Oct 23, 2006
I like what Denny Hamlin did in the closing laps yesterday. He made his best run at Jimmie Johnson and nudged him out of the way in a bid to steal a win at Martinsville.
But it was a responsible nudge — if there is such a thing — one that merely moved Johnson into the outer groove, not one that sent him into the wall. (Unlike one rookie.)
Don’t get carried away with NASCAR’s TV ratings

There’s obviously something amiss with NASCAR’s TV ratings. Las Vegas Review Journal columnist Jeff Wood makes mention of Nextel Cup’s sagging ratings in a column in today’s paper.
Wood wants to point the finger at various aspects to the Chase for the Cup, but I’m not certain I’m in that camp with him. I’d say it’s something a good deal simpler.

If NASCAR went overseas…

With NASCAR officially announcing that it will head north into Canada for a Busch race in Montreal, the series now has races in three different countries on the continent.
It seems that growing interest in the sport on this continent is enough for now, as there’s no indication anywhere that NASCAR is ready to cross oceans anytime soon. If it’s anywhere, it’s way, way down on Brian France’s to-do list.
Martinsville’s future: cloudy

Oct 18, 2006
As the Nextel Cup series returns to Martinsville for the sixth Chase race, we’re reminded that Martinsville is perennially Subject One when it comes to changes in the Cup schedule.
There are several other tracks that come up too – places like Pocono and Darlington. But Martinsville is always among the favorites (for lack of a better term).

Johnson, of course, proved that he had the best car of the day, holding off Hamlin even after Hamlin claimed the lower groove and the two spent the better part of a lap banging off of each other. Johnson eventually cleared Hamlin and quickly put about three carlengths between himself and Hamlin; and at that point, the race was over.
