PRESS RELEASE FROM VRE, 1:50 p.m.

A flood warning has been issued for much of the VRE service area for this afternoon.

CSX has implemented flood-related speed restrictions limiting Fredericksburg line trains to 40 mph.

While we have not yet officially received word yet from Norfolk Southern, flood-related speed restrictions can also be expected on the Manassas line. Flood restrictions on Norfolk Southern limit trains to 20 mph.

As a result, delays of up to 30-40 minutes on the Fredericksburg line and up to one hour on the Manassas line can be expected this afternoon and evening.

While we realize this may be inconvenient, we must take every precaution to ensure you arrive home safely.

ROADS
Due to flooding, the front gate at Quantico Marine Corps Base, near Triangle, Va., is closed, said public affairs officials at the base.

All traffic is being re-routed out the back gate near the commissary.

Additionally, the base is opening Marine Corps Base 2 Road.

The Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue reported one other road closure at U.S. 1 at Neabsco Creek this afternoon.

High waters were also reported at Old Triangle and Joplin roads, Dumfries Road and Eclipse, Purcell and Running Deer, Yates Ford Road at the county line, Catharpin and John Marshall Highway, and Sandcastle Drive.

SCHOOLS
All afternoon and evening activities for Prince William County Public Schools have been canceled because of severe weather.

POWER OUTAGES
Electricity has been restored in eastern Prince William and Fairfax counties, according to Dominion Power.

There are no reported outages in Prince William, Manassas or Manassas Park at this time.

WEATHER UPDATES
The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for southern Prince William County until 6 p.m.

A tornado warning was issued earlier today, but was canceled around 1:20 this afternoon.

Northern Virginia may experience locally heavy rainfall and isolated minor flooding today, the National Weather Service reported this morning.

High water has been reported on Interstate 395 at King Street, Purcell, Lucasville, Running Deer, Mine Road, Van Buren and Old Triangle Roads.

North and South bound lanes of U.S. 1 are shut down at Joplin Road due to high water.

A strong cold front is crossing the region today, bringing with it a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. Damaging winds will be the primary threat, the weather service said.

One to 2 inches of rainfall can be expected along and ahead of the front, with locally heavy rainfall possible. Widespread flooding is not expected, but rain could be heavy enough to cause minor flooding of small streams and creeks and in poor drainage areas.

NASCAR Yates’ future bleak, even with Gilliland’s improvement
Brian Hunsicker
Nov 15, 2006

Though the 2006 season still has four days before the final chapter is written, most everything is set in place for the 2007 season: sponsors, drivers, crews — the roster is all set for SpeedWeeks.

Except at one place: Robert Yates Racing. In a season that began with higher expectations, Yates is going out with a whimper. He brought popular veterans Elliott Sadler and Dale Jarrett to Daytona in February, but neither will return with Yates in 2007. Sadler is already gone, starting his new job with Evernham earlier in the year; he was replaced by rookie David Gilliland.

Nov 15, 2006

Manassas police said a 25-year-old man killed himself during an argument with his girlfriend Monday at the intersection of Portner and Wilson avenues in Manassas, said Sgt. Tim Neumann, Manassas police spokesman.

Officers received a call that shots had been fired in the area at 3:19 p.m.

During the investigation, police determined that the man and his girlfriend were arguing in a Lincoln Navigator driving south on Portner Avenue when the man pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head, Neumann said.

He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Neumann said.

Police are still investigating and did not release the names of the victim or the woman.

RCR must guard against overconfidence

Nov 14, 2006

Richard Childress Racing is back. It had been a long time since any of Childress’ teams had been competitive, but this year, several were.
Kevin Harvick won five races, including Sunday at Phoenix, and is tied for third in the Chase standings, 90 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson — though that’s probably not enough to catch him. And he’s destroyed the Busch circuit, winning nine times and clinching the series title in late October.
