Rainy Atlanta could deny some qualifying chances

Mar 16, 2007
That’s a miserable looking sky out there. Rainy, miserable Fridays were always the ultimate half-full/half-empty scenario for me: Miserable, yes, but Friday.
But that’s not the case for a handful of Cup teams. For them, the glass drains a little more with each passing moment.
Martin’s situation sounds familiar…

I wrote the following post yesterday, while it was still fresh in my mind. Obviously, there have been some more important developments in the NASCAR world today — with Bill France Jr.’s hospitalization in Florida under unknown circumstances — and we’re keeping an eye out for any developments.
But it’s hard to comment on a situation where we only have one basic fact. So, in the meantime, we’ll wait to hear more from the France family or NASCAR.
And with that, into today’s regularly-scheduled post:

While tooling around during my morning reading, I came across this blog on SI.com, ranking television announcers across various sports. But not racing.

David Gilliland’s pole at Daytona was a feel-good story to start the season — maybe he had put a rough introduction to Nextel Cup racing behind him.
Veteran drivers gave Gilliland a wide berth after he took over Robert Yates’ No. 38 Ford last year. He made a big jump from a field-filling Busch team to a mid-level Cup team with a superb history, and at times, he looked very much like a rookie.

The verdicts are in, and they’re not pretty.
“Ninety-nine percent of the race was terrible,” said Denny Hamlin.
“The poorest race I’ve ever been in,” said David Stremme.
“The saves out there were miraculous,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr.
