We know where Junior’s going; what about Bud?
Brian Hunsicker
Jul 13, 2007
I’m not sure if I agree with this notion that Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s pending separation with Budweiser — announced officially on Friday — is somehow breaking news.
Didn’t we all see this coming?
Rick Hendrick said as much during the introductory press conference a few weeks ago: All the primary slots were filled for Hendrick in 2008. There really wasn’t any room at the inn for Bud (though Hendrick deftly threw us off with that line in the midst of the Jr. Sweepstakes). Though it is curious that no one has announced just who Junior’s sponsor will be. Kellogg’s? Coke?

Back from a mostly-restful vacation (outside of missing our red-eye connection in Las Vegas, which earned us a free night of wheeling and dealing at the AmeriSuites — or maybe it was just three hours’ of sleep). I didn’t much worry about NASCAR until Saturday night, when I was happy I tuned in with my in-laws to catch the last 50 or so laps of the Pepsi 400.
Perhaps you heard about some of the fallout, which included an upset Kyle Busch (shocker) complaining that he was getting Vickered — when Brian Vickers announced that he was leaving Hendrick Motorsports, he was famously excluded from team meetings.
Busch, meanwhile, believes the same is happening to him.

There have been rumblings that they’d make a run at Kasey Kahne. Though he’s had a miserable year — something true across the Dodge stable — he remains one of the series’ most marketable stars. He’s a good-looking guy who minds his manners, and oh by the way, he can drive a bit too.
But on Wednesday’s teleconference, Gordon said he was in the middle of an interview and turned to give Busch a thumb’s up — no blow-off here.
