After much time in the lab, I emerge with my version of what the points system should be

At the end of last season, I promised you I’d try to figure out a better way to determine the Sprint Cup championship.
My goal was to come up with something original; but each thought I had would never be feasible to one faction or another — teams, NASCAR, sponsors.

Since the Cup series is off for Easter weekend, now’s the perfect time to take a look at how things have gone in the Nationwide series.
In a phrase: Pretty much the same as last year.

I like this “If I could...” feature on Yahoo Sports. Each week, Yahoo poses an open-ended question to its readers, who respond with their input.
The question this week is one near and dear to my heart: If you could add one track, what would it be?
Plans vary as off-week arrives; Gillett-Evernham-Lumbergh Motorsports?

At the moment, my e-mail inbox has 515 unread messages. Yeah, I know.
But come summertime when life gets a little less hectic, I’ll get around to getting rid of all those e-mails I don’t need anymore.
I don’t have any concrete numbers, but I’d guess the majority of unread e-mails come from NASCAR teams. That’s not to say, however, that the e-mails aren’t appreciated; it’s just that, for the general purposes of this blog, we probably don’t need to know which chassis David Ragan will be running at Texas. It’s nice to know, but not something that frequently comes into play in helping to put this thing together on a daily basis. (So please, PR folks, don’t mistake me for being an ungrateful recipient.)
Bank on it: Stewart will get his revenge

Tony Stewart’s seething rage was evident in his post-race interview on Sunday. It wasn’t a boiling-over rant like we saw with Stewart’s explosion after the Atlanta tire debacle; instead, it was biting sarcasm and a sense — even from far away — that, somewhere down the line, payback will come.
Stewart had every right to be upset. Kevin Harvick’s mistake on a pass attempt late in the race ruined a podium finish for Stewart. Harvick’s left front tire got onto the apron which pushed him up the track and into Stewart, who went spinning sideways and nudged the outer wall.

But, increasingly, I’ve come back to the model that Formula One uses. It’s not an exact apples-to-apples comparison; F1 races have half the field that a Cup race does.
Cup drivers doubling up on Saturdays have won
I’ve tried to answer this myself for several years, both online and in print. My best options were
About half the time, those e-mails really come in handy or just make for really interesting reading.
The damage was minor and mostly cosmetic. But there Stewart sat, facing out from the wall as car after car zipped by. He wound up 14th, the last car on the lead lap.
