As demanding a trip as the Nationwide series makes

Ready for the annual expedition south of the border?
The Nationwide series runs in Mexico City this weekend, and there’s no more grueling trip on the schedule — especially for the hauler drivers.
Catharsis, a year on

Hard to believe it’s been a year already.
On Tuesday afternoon, I went back to look at what I had written on the day — and the days following — of the Virginia Tech tragedy.

That Dale Earnhardt Jr. has led the way so far for Hendrick Motorsports shouldn’t be a surprise; Earnhardt came to NASCAR’s top organization knowing it would be his best chance to win an elusive Sprint Cup title. That two-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson isn’t far behind shouldn’t be a surprise either; Johnson won his first race of the season at Phoenix on Saturday night and is poised to make the next month a memorable one.
What, then, do we make of Jeff Gordon?
Johnson wins; we say Junior’s next

We told you it was only a matter of time.
Jimmie Johnson won on Saturday night (Sunday morning here on the east side) with a fuel-mileage gamble by crew chief Chad Knaus. Kyle Petty fails to qualify for third straight race

For the third straight week, Kyle Petty won’t be racing on Sunday.
Petty and his No. 45 Dodge failed to qualify for the race in Phoenix, meaning a long flight home with nothing to show for it.

The quickest way from Charlotte to the U.S.-Mexico border follows the Gulf Coast of Texas south to Brownsville, the southernmost point in Texas. Traffic can be a problem at the border crossing; as I check on it now, there’s
It’s weird, looking back like that, how perspective in retrospect looks so naïve. I don’t know why I
Was last year the renaissance it seemed to be? Gordon won six races a year ago, including four straight at this time last year. The six victories were his best since 2001, when he also won six times. He was the points leader for most of the season: he took over the top spot after the fifth race (Bristol) and led until the start of the Chase, 21 races later.
My own belief was that when Hendrick finally broke through — and it really was just a matter of when, not if — they were going to serve notice and have a dominant day. Something was going to click and Hendrick would have a memorable day: multiple drivers in the top five, one of them leading the most laps and one of them (likely the same driver) winning as well.
