Once again, Johnson avoids disaster

Jimmie Johnson’s swoon, usually, has started by now. Right about now, actually.
Johnson was famous for leading the points race for much of the first half of the season, then petering out as the season wound down. Sunday’s win in Indianapolis by itself does nothing to change that reputation, but it may point to a different Johnson and a different 48 team this season.
Weekend warriors hurt most by ODS closing

Old Dominion Speedway is notable because it’s one of only six NASCAR-sanctioned tracks in Virginia. That it hosted several Grand National races – precursor to Winston/Nextel Cup – makes it even more notable.
But ODS doesn’t make its money with any NASCAR tie-in. Sure, it helps with name recognition and all, but the bread and butter of ODS are the drivers, crews and teams that show up there each weekend. So it is them, the weekend warriors, that ODS’ sale and eventual closure affects most.

Photos of Mark McFarland’s early racing years at Old Dominion Speedway submitted by Tim Blankenship.
“The first picture is of Mark’s very first stock car win anywhere, and it happened at ODS. It saddens me to hear the track is closing. I was a pit crew member when Mark first started racing at ODS. I hope you enjoy the pictures,” said Blankenship in an e-mail.

ODS: Property value, neighbors trump history

The long, slow demise of Old Dominion Speedway came to light yesterday. ODS will be sold to developers, which will demolish the historic track in Manassas.
That the land on which ODS sits became more valuable than the track itself isn’t surprising, given the skyrocketing property values of Northern Virginia.
But in reading Matt Stanmyre’s account in today’s paper, I was struck by the comments of Hariet Carter.

Photos and information contributed by Dave Perry, the track photographer at Old Dominion Speedway in 2003.

Mark McFarland won the highest achievement in the local short tacks in 2003. He walked away with almost $250,000 and the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series National Champion. Mark now drives for Dale Earnhardt Jr in the #88 NAVY Monte Carlo in the NASCAR Busch Series.
